Phlebotomy is a branch of clinical practice. It involves drawing blood from patients and using it for medical tests. A Phlebotomist has to draw, manage and store blood without in a safe way so that there is no adverse reaction in the process. As a part of the training in Phlebotomy, one needs to learn to obtain, transport and test the blood samples. Also, these professionals have to be familiar with the different needs and aspects of blood tests.

For example, for some samples have to be stored in certain temperatures, some need additives etc. Also, the Phlebotomist have to know the different apparatus required for taking particular specimens. As all these aspects have to be followed for every blood test, one has to be professional trained so that he can handle every situation in the correct way.

Phlebotomy involves taking blood using different techniques. One general method includes veni-puncture. It is the procedure of collecting blood from the veins and is considered as one of the most common methods used for this purpose. The anti-cubical vein of the forearm is used to draw blood. It is located close to the surface together with some nerves near it. Generally, five to twenty five mm of blood is required for a test; the exact amount depends on the kind of test you have to take.

One has to get professional training in Phlebotomy to be able to become a professional in this medical field. To be able to enroll in a program one has to have a high school diploma or GED. Schools, community colleges, hospitals or medical laboratories offer these trainings courses. There are also some online Phlebotomy schools where you can learn this skill.

To be able to find an institute in your area, you should do online research. The actual time of the program varies from state to state. Generally they span over two to four months. It is interesting to know that during the training period, a student has to take at least a hundred blood samples as a part of the hands on training. You will be given classroom instruction and clinical interaction also involves in this.

As a career, Phlebotomy is a good choice. This is for the reason that there is increased demand of these professionals in clinics, labs and hospitals. They get good pays and there also good growth prospects in this field.
